ABOUT THE RANCH
This house enjoys sweeping vistas of Marfa’s compelling landscape of rolling grass dunes and chiseled mountain ranges. The sheer exposure and vulnerability of the site inspired an architecture of boundaries and limits while taking full advantage of unobstructed views across the vast Chihuahuan desert. The spare setting is complemented by the extraordinary quality of light particular to this region of southwest Texas.
The elongated one-story house layout threads interior and exterior spaces to form an interrelated, while two distinct courtyards establish a protected domain, a shaded actuary for the high desert climate. The experience of moving from one space to another becomes a measure interchange between intimacy and expansiveness, between proximity and distance. Newly planted vegetation and trees, most of them native to the area, complement the houses’s materiality while blending the site’s prevailing textures and colors. Partially camouflaged in its setting, Ranch 2810 asserts its presence without overwhelming the landscape. The house’s interior life is enriched by constant variation of light throughout the day and into the evening.
